Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (MDV), headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, under the leadership of President Hiroyuki Iwasaki, is excited to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with Sony Biz Networks Inc., led by President Yasutaka Ogasawara in Shibuya, Tokyo. Together, we are launching the “Emo Scan Approach,” an innovative initiative aimed at realizing true corporate health management (with a focus on mental health solutions for businesses) by integrating our PHR system ”Karteco” with Sony Biz Networks’ cloud-based attendance management system “AKASHI.”
What is the “Emo Scan Approach”?
Mental health management in the workplace faces numerous challenges. The “Emo Scan Approach” introduces a novel concept by addressing mental health through three distinct areas, offering a new and comprehensive approach to this critical issue.
The Three Pillars of the “Emo Scan Approach”:
Just as in primary healthcare, where a doctor might first measure blood pressure, then perform an interview, and finally provide a diagnosis based on the results, mental health management similarly requires a structured approach to understand “what’s happening inside an employee’s mind.” This approach involves three key areas: Objective Measurement, Subjective Evaluation, and Outcome Processing.
Pillar 1: Core Scan (Objective Measurement):
Traditional mental health strategies often lack a system for objective measurement. In this initiative, we introduce Core Scan, which combines stress and fatigue levels with attendance data to objectively measure what’s happening in the minds of employees.
Pillar 2: Subjective Check (Subjective Evaluation):
It is crucial to capture employees’ mental health concerns. Our approach aims to enhance existing stress checks and counseling services, making it easier for employees to express their mental health issues. We are committed to creating an environment that fosters open communication and improves the effectiveness of subjective evaluations.
Pillar 3: Transaction (Outcome Processing):
We will visualize the valuable mental health data obtained through objective measurements and subjective evaluations, enabling both self-management and line management to utilize this information effectively. By analyzing this data from various perspectives—such as department, job type, and position—we will track changes over time and swiftly address any signs of deterioration.
Background of the Initiative:
Presenteeism, where employees continue to work despite physical or mental health issues, is a significant concern in Japan. A 2023 survey revealed that presenteeism reduces corporate productivity by an average of 15%. This phenomenon not only negatively impacts the quality of work but also threatens the long-term performance of companies. The financial losses due to presenteeism are even higher than those from absenteeism (absence due to illness or stress) or healthcare costs, making it a major obstacle to improving corporate productivity.
Additionally, excessive workloads and pressure have led to increased stress and burnout among employees. The 2023 survey indicates that approximately 40% of Japanese workers experience high levels of stress, with 25% reporting symptoms of burnout. This situation deteriorates the workplace environment and productivity, leading to higher turnover rates and increased costs for recruitment and training. The growing recognition of mental health’s significance necessitates immediate action, as many companies continue to face unresolved challenges in this area.
Future Developments:
In response to these pressing social issues, MDV and Sony Biz Networks will continue to promote the “Emo Scan Approach.” To raise awareness about the unique features of our services, we are hosting a webinar as detailed below.
