Patented Extrapolation Function, Co-Developed with DeSC, Utilizes National Insurer Data Matched with Ledger Information
- April 11, 2025
Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Hiroyuki Iwasaki), which holds the largest clinical database in Japan, is pleased to announce that it has obtained a domestic patent (Patent No. 7653474) for the “Extrapolation Function” jointly developed with DeSC Healthcare Co., Ltd. (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Sho Segawa, hereinafter referred to as DeSC), which operates in the healthcare business within the DeNA Group.
The Extrapolation Function is incorporated into the “MDV Analyzer,” a web-based, data management tool that allows easy analyses of patient numbers, prescription days, quantities prescribed, and more. By matching insurer data from DeSC, which includes health insurance associations, national health insurance, and the elderly care medical insurance system, with ledger information, the disease rate is calculated and extrapolated for each insurer data type. Utilizing MDV’s extensive hospital network, the largest clinical data in Japan (hospital data), along with the entire population and the total number of insured individuals for each insurer and municipality, national estimates are generated.
Additionally, since insurer data takes a certain amount of time to become available, there may be a time lag between the moment users need the national values and the time when they can be calculated. To address this lag, MDV supplements the data with its hospital database, which typically reflects clinical information up to two months prior, enabling faster delivery of the most up-to-date national values to users.
MDV continues to collect anonymized data with secondary use permissions from medical institutions, and the clinical database has reached 51.53 million patients (actual patients, as of March 2025). The insurer data, including health insurance associations, national health insurance, and the elderly care medical insurance system, has reached 24.87 million people, through collaborations with DeNA and others.
Note: The “Extrapolation Function” uses only the DeSC portion of the insurer data for extrapolation.
