Estimated number of outpatients during COVID-19 pandemicIs the recovery trend confirmed in consultations?

  • April 7, 2022

Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Hiroyuki Iwasaki), which promotes the networking of medical information, has estimated and extrapolated the number of outpatients during the new coronavirus pandemic (*). Although it is showing a recovery trend toward December 2021, the result shows that it is still below the 2019 level and it seems that people refrain from conducting the medical examination. The number of outpatients in December 2021 decreased by 2.7% from 2019 (down 6.1% from 2019 in 2020).

In this tabulation, out of the medical care database (actual number of patients: 39.12 million, totaled as of the end of February 2022) from 462 hospitals nationwide that provide acute care licensed for secondary use of data, MDV used data from 378 hospitals.

The “extrapolated estimate” that shows the number of outpatients in the entire country is generated by a function to calculate an estimated value using DPC data from medical institutions owned by MDV, receipt data from health insurance associations, and NDB open data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
